Meet Bluey – A Kind, Gentle Mare Looking for a Special Home
Available for Permanent Loan – Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire based, though we will consider homes further afield.
Bluey is a beautiful, well-built 15-year-old black Dartmoor hill pony mare with an incredibly kind nature. She has a unique gift for comforting and reassuring other horses, making her an exceptional companion pony for a herd. However, due to past mistreatment, she is very nervous of human handling and requires an experienced, understanding home.
What Makes Bluey So Special?
A true friend to other horses—she naturally befriends anxious or unsettled ponies, providing them with comfort and security.
A calming presence—despite her own fears, she has repeatedly stepped in to support newly rescued ponies who need reassurance.
Thrives in a herd—she gets on well with all horses and would be invaluable as a companion to a nervous pony or in a larger herd setting.
Bluey's History & Handling Needs
Bluey has clearly been mistreated in the past, and as a result:
She cannot wear a headcollar and is fearful of direct handling.
She cannot have her feet trimmed without sedation, but fortunately, she has strong, slow-growing hooves that require minimal attention.
She is not suitable for a novice home—she needs a calm, experienced owner who will allow her to live happily without the expectation of close handling.
What Bluey Needs in a Home:
Option 1: Companion Only – If you are looking for a companion pony to live in a herd, Bluey is perfect. She is easy to manage in the field and gets along with all horses.
Option 2: Project Pony – If you are highly experienced with nervous ponies and are willing to work slowly with Bluey using gentle, positive reinforcement training, she may improve with time. However, she will likely never be a fully handled pony.
An outdoor lifestyle—she has always lived out 24/7 in a herd and thrives in this setting.
A patient, understanding home—someone who will respect her boundaries and allow her to feel safe.
Could You Offer Bluey the Home She Deserves?
Bluey has endured hardship in the past, but she has so much to offer to the right home. She asks for very little—just a safe field, kind company, and the freedom to live without pressure. In return, she will be a loyal and loving presence in your herd.
As a small rescue and rehoming charity based in Scarborough, we are committed to finding Bluey the perfect forever home. If you are within our rehoming area and can offer her a companion-only home or a knowledgeable project home, please get in touch!
